3 Şubat 1899 İstanbul'da doğdu. Babası, Lâleli'de işlettiği sazlı kıraathanesinde keman çalardı.  Kemanı küçük yaşta babasını ve öbür sanatçıları dinleyerek, kendi kendine öğrendi. 8 yaşında, babasının kıraathanesindeki sazların arasına katılacak düzeye geldi. 12 yaşında Osmanlı Musikî Cemiyeti'ne keman öğrencisi olarak girdi. Şehzade Dr. Ziyaettin Efendi'den özel dersler aldı. Tamburi Cemil Bey'den ve Bestenigar Ziya Bey'den fasıl müziği bilgisi edindi.    1911'de Sultan Reşat'ın Rumeli gezisine katılan saz sanatçılarının Selanik'te verdikleri konserde yer aldı.  1922-1926 yılları arasında İzmir'de bağımsız çalıştı. Üç yıl Paris'te kaldı. Fransa, Hindistan, İran, Irak, Suriye, Mısır ve Kıbrıs'ta konserler verdi. Ud da çalardı. Udu, kemanı ve sesiyle plaklar doldurdu.    30'un üzerinde filmin müziklerini besteledi. 1948 de Unutulmayan Sır adlı filmdeki Nene Gerek adlı bestesiyle o yıl en başarılı besteci seçildi. İstanbul Radyosu'nda sanatçı olarak, İstanbul Konservatuarı'nın Yürütme Kurulu ve Türk Musikisi Sanat Kurullarında, TRT Repertuar Kurulunda üye olarak yer aldı. 11 Mart 1969'da vefat etmiştir.
