Umut Akyürek, anne tarafından Erzurumlu. Türk Sanat Müziği’nde geleceğin assolisti olarak gösterilen Akyürek, “Erzurum beni gururlandırıyor” diyor. Akyürek, gururunun nedenini bakın nasıl açıklıyor: “Gururlanıyorum, çünkü, gerçek Türk olduğumu hissediyorum.”    Anneannem Melahat hanım, Erzurum Aşkale İlçesi'nden. Ailece, Ankara 'nın Polatlı İlçesine göçmüşler. Erzurum'u anneannemden dinlerdim. Erzurum ve Erzurum insanının yeri yüreğimde farklı bir köşede. Ne de olsa Dadaş sayılırım. Mertler, yiğitler yatağına üç kez gelebildim. Ama arzu ettiğim ortamı bulamadığım için fazla gezemedim. Önümüzdeki yıl (2005) Erzurum'u doya doya gezmeye geleceğim.    Magazin Gazeteciler Derneği tarafından düzenlenen yarışmada yılın sanatçısı seçildim. 5 sanatçı finale kalmıştı. 33 jürinin oy kullandığı bir ortamda en çok oyu ben aldım. Bu meslek hayatımda beni gururlandıran bir olaydı.. Yine Radyo ve Televizyon Yapımcıları Derneği , Türk Sanat Müziği'nde yılın en iyi sanatçısı ödülünü aldım
