25 Şubat 1907 tarihinde, bugün Bulgaristan sınırları içindeki Gümülcine kazası Eğridere köyünde doğdu. Öğrenimini Balıkesir ve İstanbul Muallim Mekteplerinde yaptıktan sonra Yozgat’ta öğretmenliğe başladı. Kazandığı sınavla gittiği Almanya’da Postsam ve Berlin’de öğrenim gördü. Dönüsünde çeşitli okullarda öğretmenlik, Devlet Konservatuarı’nda dramaturgluk yaptı. 1931 yılında bölücü propaganda yaptığı ihbarı üzerine 3 ay tutuklu kaldı. Görevine döndükten bir süre sonra tekrar tutuklandı, yargılandı ve mahkum edildi. Cumhuriyetin 10. Yılı nedeniyle çıkan aftan yararlanarak salıverildi. Çeşitli resmi kuruluşlarda 1945 yılına kadar çalıştı. İşsiz kaldığı bir dönemde Aziz Nesin ile birlikte Marko Paşa’yı ve onun devamı olan mizah dergilerini çıkardı. Bu dergilerdeki yazılarında, yayın yoluyla hakaret ettiği savıyla yargılandı ve mahkum oldu. 2 Nisan 1948’de yurt dışında çıkmak için anlaştığı, kendisine kılavuzluk yapan Ali Ertekin tarafından, Bulgaristan siniri yakınlarında Sazara köyü civarındaki ormanda öldürüldü. Şiirler, hikâyeler, romanlar yazdı, çeviriler yaptı. İlk yazıları Balıkesir’de Irmak dergisinde çıktı (1925/26). 1930’lu yıllarda öyküye gerçekçi ve yeni bir soluk getirdi. Öykülerinde, tanımlamakta güçlük çektiğimiz kimi duyguları ustalıkla anlatır. İnsanin zavallılığını ve gücünü ayni sarsılmaz üslupla, zaman zaman masalsı ve destansı bir biçimde yansıtmayı başardı.
