Yedi yaşında yakalandığı çiçek hastalığı sonuçu sol gözünü tamamen sağ gözünü ise kısmen kaybeder. Üç yıl sonrasında ise bir kaza sonucu görme yeteneğini bütünüyle kaybeder. On yaşından itibaren bağlama ile geçen ömründe 1933 yılına kadar Pir Sultan Abdal, Yunus Emre, Karacoğlan gibi tanınmış ustaların eserlerini çalıp söyler. Ömrü yoksulluk ve çilelerle geçen Aşık Veysel, 1933 yılında Sivas Aşıklar Bayramı'na katılır. Burada Ahmet Kutsi Tecer'in ilgisini çeker. Bir süre Köy Enstitüleri'nde saz öğretmenliği yapar. Şiirlerinde birlik ve bütünlük mesajları veren, bilim ve teknolojiyi önemseyip benimseyen Veysel, sevecen diliyle tüm dinleyenlerin gönlünde yücelmiştir. 1965 yılında TBMM tarafından 'Anadilimiz ve Milli Beraberliğimize Katkılarından Dolayı Özel Kanunla Vatana Hizmet' tertibinde maaş bağlanır Aşık Veysel'e. Ve 21 Mart 1973 yılında "sâdık yâri kara toprak"la buluştu. .
