1950'de babasının görevi gereği bulunduğu Urfa'da doğdu. Memuriyet sebebiyle ilk ve orta tahsilini muhtelif il ve ilçelerde yaptı. İlk müzik terbiyesini ailesinden aldı. Daha sonra İstanbul Belediye Konservatuarı ile Üsküdar Mûsikî Cemiyeti'nde değerli hoca Emin Ongan'dan müzik tahsilini tamamladı. Çok çeşitli sahne ve plak çalışmalarıyla devam ettirdiği müzik hayatı 1981 yılında İstanbul Radyosu'ndaki sanatçılığı ile  sürmekte iken, 1991 yılında kurulan Kültür Bakanlığı İstanbul Tarihi Türk Müziği Topluluğu'na Genel Yönetmen olarak atandı. 1998 yılında Devlet Sanatçısı unvanını aldı. Hacı Arif Bey, Aliş, Hafız Yusuf Efendi gibi müzikal belgesel filmleri çevirdi. Singapur'da yapılan Asya Müzik Festivali'nde ülkemizi temsil etti. 1980 yılından beri iştirak ettiği Konya Mevlânâ İhtifalleri, 1984'den beri yer aldığı İstanbul Festivali ile Güldeste isimli klasik ve tasavvuf müziği konserleri ve Tokyo'dan San Francisco'ya kadar pek çok yurt dışı ve sayısız yurt içi konserleri ile müzik birikimlerini sanat severlere sundu. Türk klasik ve tasavvuf müziğinde, müzik çevrelerinin takdirlerine ulaşabilmiş olmanın kıvanç ve mutluluğunu yaşayan İstanbul Tarihi Türk Müziği Topluluğu Genel Yönetmeni Devlet Sanatçısı Ahmet Özhan; evli ve Özgül ile Özcan isimli iki çocuk babasıdır.
