1949 yılında Konya'da doğan Sakman, profesyonel müzik yaşamına, müzisyen bir babanın oğlu olarak, İzmir'de lise çağlarında başladı. İlk çaldığı enstrüman davul oldu. Daha sonra gitarla tanıştı. 70'li yılların, bir grup oluşumu içinde şarkılar yapma ruhu, müzik yaşantısında önemli rol oynadı. Grup Doğuş ile 12 yıllık bir beraberliği oldu. Bu dönemde aranjörlük ve armoni eğitimi aldı. Grup Doğuş tan ayrıldıktan sonra reklam ve film müziklerinin yanı sıra, pop müziği şarkıcılarına şarkılar verip, düzenlemeler yapmaya başladı.  Vedat Sakman ilk solo albümü olan "Müzisyen"i 1989 yılında yaptı. 1990 yılanda  Zuhal Olcay'ın "Küçük Bir Öykü" albümünün prodüksiyonunu gerçekleştirdi. Albümdeki tüm besteler ve düzenlemeler kendisinin, sözler Mehmet Teoman'ın idi. 1991 yılanda  yine Zuhal Olcay'ın "İki Çift Laf" albümünün sekiz şarkısının sözlerin yazıp, müziğini ve düzenlemelerini yaptı. Aynı yıl tüm şarkı ve düzenlemeleri kendisine ait olan "Kapılar" adli ikinci albümünü çıkardı.  1994 yılanda üçüncü solo albümünü çıkardı."Sevgileri Unutmadık" adlı bu albümdeki sekiz şarkının beste ve düzenlemeleri kendisine aitti. 1997 yılanda Hümeyra'nın "Beyhude" albümünün müzik direktörlüğü ve aranjörlüğünü yaptı. Hümeyra bu albümde Vedat Sakman'ın iki şarkısın seslendirdi. 1998 yılında Zuhal Olcay'ın "İhanet" ve Leman Sam'ın "Ýıla" adlı albümlerinin müzik direktörlüğünün ve aranjörlüğünün yanı sıra çoğu şarkıların da söz ve müziğini yazdı. 2002 Nisan ayında "Usulca" isimli solo albümünü çıkardı.
