 27 Ağustos 1938 tarihinde İzmir'de dünyaya geldi. Balıkesir Lisesi'ni bitirdi. Müziğe 1961 yılında Ankara'da çeşitli kulüplerde şarkı söyleyerek başladı. Ardından Müfit Kiper Orkestrası'nın solisti oldu. 1964'te milli orkestramızın solisti olarak Balkan Festivali'nde şarkı söyledi. İlk plağında "İbibikler Öter Ötmez" adlı türküyü seslendirdi. 1968'de "Haydar Haydar", 1969'da "Benim de Canım Var" dikkati çeken 45'lik plaklarıydı. 1970'te en büyük hiti "Hasret" geldi. 1971'de "Bir Falcı Vardı" ve "Darla Dirlada ", 1972'de "Öyle Sarhoş Olsam ki", 1973'te "Koy Koy Koy" ile beğeni topladı. Nilüfer ve Modern Folk Üçlüsü ile seslendirdiği "Arkadaş Dur Bekle" çok sevildi (1973). Harika yorumladığı unutulmaya şarkılardan biri de "Kadınım "dı (1974). "Benim Halkım" ve "Şerefe" 1975'te, "Kemancı" 1977'de, "Çocukluğum" 1978'de sevilen şarkıları oldu. 1980'li yıllarda şöhretinin mirasını yedi. İki kez evlenen sanatçının Tansu adında bir oğlu var (1962). 1990'lı yılları Urla'da yaşayarak geçiren Tanju Okan siroz hastalığına yenik düşerek 23 Mayıs 1996'da aramızdan ayrıldı.
