1945 YILINDA Tunceli''de doğdu. İstanbul Hukuk Fakültesinde öğrenime başladı; 12 Mart 1971 darbesinden sonra yurt dışına çıkmak zorunda kaldı. Bir süre Berlin''deki Hür Üniversiteye devam etti. Döndükten sonra Ankara Hukuk Fakültesini bitirdi. İstanbul Barosuna kayıtlı; buna rağmen hiç avukatlık yapmadı. 1968 yılında Halk Oyuncuları tiyatro topluluğuna girdi ve "Pir Sultan Abdal" oyununda oynadı. Bu oyunla kitleler tarafından tanındı ve benimsendi. 1970 yılında Halk Oyuncuları topluluğundan ayrıldı; tek başına çalışmaya başladı. Avrupa''da ve Türkiye''de sayısız resitaller verdi. Sinema ile ilişkisi 1973 yılında Güneş Karabuda''nın yönettiği, Cezayir''de çekilen "Bebek" adlı filmle başladı. 1979 yılında Berlin''de çekilen, Şerif Gören''in yönettiği "Almanya Acı Vatan"da oynadı.
