1942 İstanbul doğumlu. Ankara Radyosu'nda stajyer olarak müzik yaşamına başlayan sanatçı,       kendisine sunulan şansı iyi kullanarak, uzun sayılmayacak bir süre zarfında memleketin en popüler isimlerinden biri haline gelmiştir. Arka arkaya yaptığı plaklar ile büyük bir başarı elde eden Gönül Akkor; bu başarısını, sahne çalışmalarına da aktarmış ve ülkenin en aranan "assolist" lerinden biri haline gelmiştir. Asıl olarak Türk Müziği şarkıcısı olarak bilinmesine ve daha çok bu alanda ünlenmiş olmasına rağmen, Türk Popu'nda da söz sahibi olmuş ve bu alanda yaptığı plaklar ile de büyük bir başarı elde etmiştir. Türk Popu'nun en önemli söz yazarları olan Sezen Cumhur Önal ve Fecri Ebcioğlu ile birlikte çalışmış olan Gönül Akkor'un bu tür plakları arasında, Sahibinin Sesi tarafından yayımlanmış "Sana Ben Kulum / Böyle Gelmiş Böyle" adlı 45'liği büyük satış rakamlarına ulaşmış ve sanatçının, 60 sonları ile 70 başları arasında epeyce pop 45'lik yapmasına sebep olmuştur. 70'lerin hemen başında, Bora Ayanoğlu'nun "Güller ve Dudaklar" adlı şarkısını plak yapmış ve Saner tarafından yayımlanan bu plak da büyük bir hit haline gelmiştir. Türk Popu'nun bir başka önemli ismi Kamuran Akkor'un ablası olan Gönül Akkor, 90'lı yıllarda da Sezen Aksu'nun önerdiği bir projeyi kabul etmiş ve "Beni Tanıma" adlı albüm ve aynı isimli şarkı ile yeniden herkesin gönlünde taht kurmuştur.
